Child sponsorship Plus

The children available for sponsorship are all from the most impoverished backgrounds. Sponsorship gives you the chance to share and better a child's life. Your donation contributes to a full program of education, nutrition, social services and support. You'll receive detailed information and photos and have the chance to become a valuable mentor, pen-pal and friend. Communication with your sponsored child starts immediately after you enroll. The links it can create and build can become something precious and inspiring in the child's life and in your own.

Child Sponsorship Plus (From age 7-16 years old) (US $150 a month or $1,800 a year)

Within those children who are available for sponsorship, the Community Centre will identify children and families who are eligible for the "Plus Family Secure" plan, which reaches into the child's family and community. With all the benefits of the regular sponsorship programs, these sponsorships target the children with the direst needs, including serious impoverishment, no access to public school, garbage scavenging and abusive or neglected home lives. Many of these children have had no or only occasional schooling because of their need to provide an income to their families, leaving them with little or no opportunity to rise above their lives of deprivation and hopelessness. The sponsorship provides the children with access to public school, uniforms, books, study materials and even transport to and from school. In addition, each child attends supplementary classes in one of ACO's school. These basic structures are mostly located within the most impoverished garbage dump communities and currently provide education to over 165 children. In this scheme, ACO goes beyond the regular sponsorship by providing a long term educational commitment to the child and their family, essential if the child is to be allowed an uninterrupted education. But lifting a child into a new world of hope and learning, while leaving their siblings and parents in their dire circumstances, is a limited success and does little to promote healing at a family level. The sponsored child's family therefore receives immediate short term assistance, usually in the form of a monthly rice allowance, rent subsidy and health care. Assistance is normally for 3 months, enough to get the families back on their feet but not so long as to cause dependence. The family also has access to ACO's comprehensive essential services throughout the child's education, including medical treatment, maternal care, subsidized food, clean water and social support. For the long term, the child's parents are given a trust fund/savings plan. ACO deposits money into a family account each month, so that, after a few years, they will have the funds and resources to make significant improvements to their lives by, perhaps, starting a small business, buying back lost farmland, rebuilding their home or paying off their debts. ACO provides training in budgeting and in how to handle money, alongside a continuous review of the family's progress toward their goal while acting as a form of trustee and "money manager". To lessen any disparity of income or obvious community imbalance, a portion of the sponsorship goes towards providing the community with essential services, such as subsidized food, clean water, health care and emergency shelter. In order to qualify for this program, the  family must not be in receipt of aid from any other organization and the parents must commit to:
• Ensure the child attends school every day.
• Stop the child from working, such as garbage scavenging or street selling.
• Allow ACO to care for the child's health and nutritional needs.
• Do their best to provide a safe home-life, ideally free of alcoholism, domestic violence, gambling addictions and substance abuse. ACO will provide the necessary interventions and counseling. Your donation can make a difference. Please make our program come true. This is our program for the future step.
